With a little less than a month left to go, I can officially say that Korea has been life changing. The people I have meet here, and the things that I have done are literally things I have only dreamed about. I’ve done a lot these past few days. I’ve traveled to Japan, gone around Korea. I am really sad to leave Korea, but excited to see my family and be able to tell the stories I have acquired. May was especially busy! I have been busy with classes and trying to go out and do what little I have left to accomplish. Recently I have tried to become for active and fit, so everyday you can hear my working out in my room trying to do just that. Not that it is working but hey it is helping me feel better, and making me appreciate the outdoors life of Utah. I also in the past month have been teaching English and it really is a worth while experience. I think every person who comes to Korea should try it at least once, because it really does make you happy when you see improvement. Down below there are bunch of places that I’ve been to around Korea and Japan. I went to youngsan Jimjilbang and got all my privates stared at by old ladies, and also got a full body scrub down by a 60 year old Grandma in her fancy panties. Needless to say it was a bit scaring. On top of the Jimjilbang I went to Dukboki Town and ate famous rabokki Ramen and Dukboki. I then went on a Seoul Tour which is where I at 32cm icecream in Myeongdong, went to Gyunkbokgung Palace, and Jokyesa Shrine. Sorry I am terrible at translating Korean to English. These places were so much fun, and really pretty to look at. I also went techno bowling in Hongdae, and a Baseball game! GO SAMSUNG! All in all May was super busy but an amazing month~
So much has happened and so little has happened. Along with school and taking midterms which were so hard I have been trying to go out and about, be active that sort of thing. The sucky thing about being active is that it costs money- which is something I don’t have! Any way life aside, my hair has grown even more!! Ahh it is getting so long and this makes me happy as a clam~ got to love the long hair, even though it is getting hotter here! This past month I met star Beak Ji-young so that was amazing! She was super nice, one of my friends spotted her at a coffee shop. I of course (after being talked into it) played the foreigner fan to a T and got a signature.. which was done with my friend eyeliner till her other friend who is a celebrity gave her a pen. Needles to say I’m networking. This week I am also going to be jumping across the pond and visiting my friend all the way in Japan! I am so excited to be able to get to go there and for 175$ it’s a pretty killer deal. It feels like we’ve been talking about visiting for years than thinking back on it, we have been talking about it for years. So the fact that this actually happening seems unreal to me. Lately Korea has been going through a really rough period. With the Sewol ferry it has really put a damper on many people. It feels like I am always hearing about someone friend or a friend of a friend’s brother was on the ferry. Maybe it is because I am in school right now, but both myself and my roommate were greatly affected by the crash. To me it really comes down to how everyone was told to stay where they were, to me it’s incomprehensible. My thoughts and prays go out to all of those families.
So much has happened these past couple of months. I was going to update a heck of a lot sooner, but I kept waiting for more exciting things to happen. Then a bunch of stuff happened and I was like ahh it’s too much to talk about! But anyway I am here talking about it. From the pictures you can see that I went to Namsan TWICE, and it was friggen awesome. I was super sad about the 2nd time since it was a send off to my friend who was leaving Korea after she finished her study abroad. Along with going to Namsan I have been super busy with school, it started around the beginning of March. The classes I am taking are fun, but cab be a bit boring so that’s cool I guess. With school came all the club activities since I am staff member for a club here at Hanyang. It is a lot of fun, and definitely helped me learn how to talk to people more openly. I am hoping that my Korean is advancing I am more open with talking to people and willing to push myself more to make the situation understood. Along with school and namsan, I have created a new hobby which is going out and eating delicious food! Literally the best thing on the planet. This week my friend Kaytlin from Utah came to Korea to visit me!! I am so excited that she is here, and making me go out and do things, cause lord knows if she wasn’t I would just be sitting in my bed watching Sherlock. FYI that show is AMAZING! With her being here and all I decided that come May 17 I will be traveling to Japan so YAY! Anyway as I am showing my friend the Gyeongbokgung Palace here in Seoul, we literally stumbled our way into an SNSD fan signing. While there they asked if there were any foriegners of course me being me I yelled at the top of my lungs with my roommate, and we secured ourselves 3 seats! Thus letting us get a fansign from each of the SNSD members… I’d say these past 2 months have been A+!
So much has happened these past month that I found no time to keep up with the blog. I’ve had a winter class that I am waking up for every morning at 8 in the morning.. super sucky! While I have been trying to do many things, and be a lot more productive, I found that this is reliant on the amount of money I have, so I try to space out things to do which means not as many blog posts because updating about going home can be pretty redundant. So I will pretty much cover the biggest events that happened this month in proper Emalee fashion…
Starting with New Years.. well that was a show. It is not that it was a terrible New Years, in fact it was probably the best one I have ever had.. It all started In the morning when I went to a museum that had some really amazing cultural exhibits, and got to see one of my last semester teachers! Didn’t realize how much I missed her till I got to meet here again. Later me, my roommate Kaitlin, our friend Katie, and other friend Chelsea all went out for dinner, and then decided to go clubbing in Hongdae! Now Hongdae is literally my favorite place on the earth, and so of course I wanted to go on New Years. While in the club that had the most handsome bartender I have ever seen I used my free drink ticket slyly and then went back for more. Me and my friend Katie decided to get cocktails when I was giving the surprise of getting 3 for 2, so… I double fisted that night. Then Kaitlin my roommate found us and said “Oh, come to VIP! ” While there these rich rich guys were letting us drink their alcohol for free and we did not need to be told twice, which pretty much is what happened we drank their alcohol and bounced.. Kisses ensued from cute boys around the club. Needless to say I got multiple New Years Kisses.
Later in the month I went Ice Skating! It was outdoors and so amazing because I have never been outdoor skating! While there, I found an attractive worker, and told my friends oh he is cute! I then found out my friends made an announcement of my love over the speaker.. which would of been fine except the radio DJ realized I was the only foreign and made it plainly obvious, needless to say no number was given.. SAD FACE! After skating our butts off we went and got 8 color Sam Gap Sal! Which to this day is the best meat I have had! So much marinade I thought I would die from happiness! After all the meat and happiness we went to go get Japanese pizza and cocktails and a really awesome restaurant that if you asked me to find now I wouldn’t know the first place to start.. except maybe which subway station.
Then I few random nights happened of delicious pizza, and going to a makgolii bar which now to this day I hate the stuff… I had the worst headache of my life the day after followed by hot sweats, ya I never want to repeat that again!
Now on to my BIRTHDAY! My birthday week was absolutely amazing! First, the club I joined HGSU surprised me with a cake. I was lied to saying that someone disliked me earlier in the week and that by the next meeting they would tell me who it is, then I was told it was one of my really close friends only to find out they were pulling a massive prank on me so they could surprise me with a cake. Needless to say I started bawling from an overwhelming sense of love and just had all the feels really! I don’t handle feels to well! After that we all went and ate Alchon which is like a really delicious Bimbimbap place that I like, and then we went to the cutest beer place ever! Literally it was the cutest thing, and it didn’t hurt that the walls were covered in HOT MEN!
Now on my actual Birthday which is the 25th I went to you guessed it Hongdae! I went with my friend Katilin and Katie, and met up with two of my friends from Korea, SeungJu and KaRung! But before Hongdae me, Kaitlin, and Katie all went to the most AMAZING AQUARIUM EVER! Side note before this we all got food with our friend Angela, and the old lady that worked there instantly became my friend! It was so amazing and my favorite drama was filmed there and I just couldn’t handle it! I literally was like a kid on Christmas. Of course me being me I would spend my 21st birthday in an aquarium! While there I saw so many fishes and it was just awesome! COEX MALL YOU COMPLETED ME TODAY! After the aquarium we met up with my friend SeungJu and KaRung! After meeting up with them they took us to the coolest restaurant ever that in Utah I would think belonged to Hipsters… but in Korea there is no such thing as a Hipster and it was AWESOME! It was a Pizza and Salad place.. but plot twist the salad was really spaghetti! It was literally the definition of pasta salad and it was brilliant! The food was so delicious and I got the cutest planner as a gift from KaRung! After the Pizza place, and name escapes me at the moment we went and got Cocktails! What 21st birthday isn’t complete without drinking! While there I ordered 2 cocktails! Why? Because I am 21~ and I got a freebee too! The free one was a birthday cocktail that they light on fire and make you take in one shot! Holy SHIT IT WAS SCARY! I was also given a cake that SeungJu bought from Dunkin Doughnuts and it was like I was biting into pieces of chocolate heaven! I really am going to miss Korean cakes when I go back home! Can I just stay in Korea for the meat and the cakes please? My birthday was really such an amazing night and I am so happy I got spend it with caring friends and I don’t know what I would have done if not for them! I was so happy to be able to go to Hongdae and eat the delicious food, be with friends, and drink a cocktail! It was really all I wanted to do! I was really stressed about my Birthday and worried that I would become extremely homesick, but with the love from all of the wonderful friends I have made over here, my Birthday was something really special the whole week was really special actually! I also couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend it! This year is starting out to be the best one so far! Here’s to more good things to follow!
The flaming drink!!
So these past couple of days I have really been trying to keep myself busy so that I don’t feel as alone with the holiday season and everything. But even with all the activities I have been doing I haven’t been taking lots of photos! I know bad me, but you know it’s fine! I did however record some videos of street performers in Hongdae when I went there for Christmas! Class has been going and it’s going really slowly. I think because it is a Winter class and the motivation isn’t there as much as it was last semester, but it is good for me to learn and it’s free so added bonus!
Now lets talk about Chirstmas! It actually was a pretty fun time this year. Which I thought that it would be awful you know, not being with family and friends, but it was actually despite all the odds was a pretty fun time. Christmas Eve I went to Hongdae and watched a bunch of street performers ate delicious Shabu Shabu, and sang my heart out in a Christmas edition of karaoke! Some videos are posted below. On the actual Christmas day I was super sad, and really didn’t want to do anything, because I miss my friends and family! That day I was suppose to go to Namsam tower, so me and my roommate picked up our sad selves and went to Myungdong which is next to Namsan. While in Myungdong we were looking around and what do we stumble upon.. Just a massive hug line full of attractive boys giving out free hugs. I literally have never been happier when standing in the cold for three hours hugging attractive boys! The euphoric feeling was amazing and really did make my Christmas a much better one!
